JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - When the Jacksonville Jaguars introduced starter Toby Gerhart before last weeks game, Gerhart and his fellow running backs ran onto the field together. They called it a sign of unity. It also served as a strong visual depicting what the Jaguars backfield has become. Its running back by committee in Jacksonville, with Gerhart, Denard Robinson, Jordan Todman and rookie Storm Johnson all sharing carries. The Jaguars (0-5) rank 31st in the league in rushing, averaging 67 yards a game, so the decision to get more guys involved was an obvious one.Johnson could be the wild card in the rotation. A seventh-round draft pick from UCF, Johnson was inactive the first three weeks because of ankle injury, and although he was active Week 4 at San Diego, he didnt play. He made his NFL debut Sunday against Pittsburgh, running four times for a team-high 27 yards. It wasnt a dazzling performance, but Johnsons 20-yard run in the third quarter matched the teams longest of the season (quarterback Blake Bortles) and was the longest for any Jaguars running back. Its not surprising to me, coach Gus Bradley said. I mentioned two weeks ago he had a good practice. Last week he had a good week, and its that trust and hes building trust. For him to go in there and perform and really capture his opportunity was pretty cool to see. ... The runs he had were very impressive.Johnson re-injured his ankle late in the game, but should be fine for Sundays game at Tennessee (1-4).Still in rebuilding mode, the Jaguars might start Johnson at some point. Bradley and general manager Dave Caldwell have gone with several youngsters this season, especially on offence.Bortles, centre Luke Bowanko, right guard Brandon Linder, tight end Nic Jacobs and receivers Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns all started in the 17-9 loss to the Steelers. Rookie linebacker Telvin Smith also got the nod, giving the team seven rookies in the starting lineup.By comparison, fellow AFC South teams Houston, Indianapolis and Tennessee started one each.Jacksonville also has five second-year players in its starting lineup, making the Jaguars one of the leagues youngest and least experienced teams.Caldwell and Bradley believe that if the competition is close between two players, its usually best to go with the younger guy, especially if they think hes got more upside.Well, its a challenge that weve said before that we accept, Bradley said. Somewhere down the line these guys cant be rookies anymore, I believe. I think somewhere theyve played enough games where they say, All right, lets go. I dont want to talk about that anymore. We understand that.Gerhart and the other running backs understand the situation.Although Jacksonville gave Gerhart a three-year, $10 million contract in free agency to be the No. 1 back, the former Minnesota Vikings backup knew he would be sharing the load this season.Injuries have made it even more necessary.Gerhart sprained his right ankle in the season opener against Philadelphia when he was horse-collar tackled from behind. He has been hobbled since. And it seemingly got worse Sunday when he sprained his right foot. He returned to the game, but finished with a season-low four carries for 9 yards, and played just 10 snaps.I know that he felt really good going into the game and then early he had an issue, Bradley said.Regardless of what happens to the starting spot, the running backs insist it wont matter because theyre so close. That was evident when they took the field together Sunday. Were just a tight group and we just said, Why not? Gerhart said.Todman said it carried over from last year, when former Jaguars standout Maurice Jones-Drew led the group and got everyone hanging out together. They even nicknamed themselves the wolf pack. They didnt get introduced as a group in 2013, but decided to do it Sunday a€” fitting given the state of the position. It was a group decision, Todman said. Why not? Lets do it. It was good to have everybody out there active and able to play.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Adam Lallana Jersey t Shirt . Slovenia joined Croatia in the last eight and its victory allowed Italy to advance as well, despite its 76-68 loss to Croatia. The host team nearly blew a huge lead but held on to send the home fans into a frenzy in Stozice Arena. Spain, the defending two-time champion, cruised past Finland 82-56. Spain, with two wins and two losses, plays Italy (2-2) in its final second-round game. Greece and Finland also still have a chance of making it to the last eight. Greece (1-3) plays Croatia (3-1), and Finland (1-3) goes against Slovenia (3-1). From the other group, France, Lithuania and Serbia have already advanced. Dragic scored his teams first 11 points, before his younger brother Dragan scored the next four to set the tone for the game. Goran Dragics impact was huge, at both ends of the court. After making one free throw, the NBA player grabbed an offensive rebound and dished out an assist for Nebojsa Joskimovics 3-pointer that put Slovenia up by 20 early in the third quarter. The lead quickly grew to 26, and Greece suffered even worse when forward Kosta Papanikolaou limped off with an ankle injury midway through the quarter. "Its a very bad ankle sprain," Greece coach Andrea Trinchieri said. "We came back with desire and passion in the second half but we missed the chance to close within three and that was that." While Goran Dragic had a rest in the fourth, Slovenias lead melted to six by the time he returned. He stole the ball and put in a layup -- his only points in the fourth quarter -- to make it 70-62. Greece miissed three straight 3-point attempts and Jaka Lakovic made three of four free throws to keep Slovenia ahead.dddddddddddd. Goran Dragic also had five rebounds and four assists, while his brother added 11 points. "We had a huge lead but it wasnt over," Goran Dragic said. "We knew they dont like to play fast, especially in the first two quarters. The key was our rebounding." Slovenia coach Boza Maljkovic said his teams 21 offensive rebounds made the difference. "We played well for 26 minutes, then we went down and I didnt like it." Vassilis Spanoulis led Greece with 21 and eight rebounds. Croatia trailed by 13 early and was down by five at halftime but outscored Italy 26-9 -- including a 10-0 run -- in the third to go ahead for good, holding off a late rally. Shooting guards Bojan Bogdanovic and Krunoslav Simon had eight points each during the run and point guard Roko Leno Ukic scored six straight to spark Croatias comeback. Bogdanovic finished with 18 points, while Luigi Datome had 24 for Italy. "I dont think we need to lose any confidence now. We lost the games against Slovenia and Croatia but we were not dominated and we dont need to fear Spain," Datome said. "The crucial moment was the third quarter, they went 10-0 and turned the game around." Italy cut the deficit to four with 2:44 left to play but Marco Cusin missed a dunk, Bogdanovic grabbed the rebound and Simon hit a jumper before sinking two free throws to end Italys hopes. Croatia got 21 points from its bench, compared to seven for Italy. Jose Calderon led Spain with 23 points, while Petteri Koponen had 17 for Finland. Spain had 15 more rebounds and 10 more assists than Finland, which dropped to 1-3. METAIRIE, La. - As Drew Brees examined the box score from New Orleans latest victory, he was struck by how equitably the Saints distributed the ball among players at various skill positions. For a quarterback trying to lead his team through a late-season playoff push, it was a re-assuring sign that defences — starting with Atlantas on Sunday — will have a hard time anticipating what New Orleans is about to throw at them.We feel good about it. It was interesting coming off this last game, just looking at the stat book, Brees said, noting that four players tied for a team-high five receptions, while another had four. It just goes to show you weve got a lot of guys that we spread the ball around to.Relatively good health and the emergence of younger players have combined to give the Saints a wider range of options for moving the ball than theyve had for much of the season. The timing is fortuitous. Despite being 6-8, the Saints will win the NFC South Division and host a playoff game if they win their final two games against Atlanta and Tampa Bay. They could even seal up the division this weekend with a victory combined with a Carolina loss to Cleveland.I like to think that were mixing it up quite a bit now to the point where were trying not to allow defences to key on us, Brees said. The Saints now rank second in the NFL in total offence, averaging 422.6 yards. The passing game ranks third (301.8 yards per game) and the running game ninth (120.8 yards per game).During a 31-15 victory in Chicago on Monday night, tight end Jimmy Graham; receivers Marques Colston and Kenny Stills; and running back Pierre Thomas each had five receptions for between 65 and 87 yards apiece. Third-year receiver Nick Toon, who didnt have a single catch until the 11th game of the season, caught four passes for 43 yards.Second year tight end Josh Hill, who still covers kicks and punts, and leads the Saints in special teams tackles, caught two touchdown passes and now has five this season, second only to Grahams nine.Falcons coach Mike Smith said the Saints possess one of the top offences in all of football, and that the unit is getting healthy at the right time.I was very impressed with the performance of (New Orleans) on Monday night offensively, Smith said. The Falcons wont have to concern themselves with first-round draft pick Brandin Cooks, who caught seven passes for 77 yards and a touchdown against Atlanta in Week 1 and was among the Saints top receivers before breaking his hand against Cincinnati on Nov. 16. But other players have combined to compensate for Cooks absence.Stills has averaged about 88 yards per game during his past four games. Toon is gradually becoming more of a factor. Colston is not having his best season but has been solid, with 771 yards and four TDs receiving. The Saints top three tight ends are healthy and have combined for 16 touchdowns. New Orleans top three running backs, all of whom have missed between three and six games at various points in the season, are now healthy as well.Power runner Khiry Robinson last Monday finally touched the ball for the first time since breaking his forearm in the sixth game of the season, getting three carries and even catching two passes.Ingram, despite missing three games early this season, is 131 yards away from his first 1,000-yard rushing campaign and ran for a 15-yard score against the Bears.Ingram said Saints coaches are adept at getting lots of different personnel on the field in different situations, giving defences a lot of different things to prepare for.Brees, meanwhile, was pleased to see the Saints getting Ingram, Thomas and Robinson all involved in the same a game for the first time in nearly two months. Each guy brings a different skill set to the table, but Im confident at all times with any of those guys in there, Brees said.Notes: Coach Sean Payton gave the Saints extra rest on Wednesday. The club was still required to submit an estimated injury report, which stated that left tackle Terron Armstead (neck), defensive tackle Akiem Hicks (ankle) and strong safety Jamarca Sanford (hamstring) would have been held out of practice. ... Varlamov, 25, faces one count of third-degree assault. His attorney, Jack Rotole, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment. His agent, Paul Theofanous, has said the player is innocent. Varlamovs girlfriend, Evgeniya Vavrinyuk, told investigators he attacked her on Oct. 30 in her apartment. She also accused him of dragging her by her hair and telling her that he would have beaten her more if they had been in Russia, authorities said.dddddddddddd The Avalanche said in a statement that team officials were informed of the district attorneys decision, but would "have no further comment until the entire legal process has concluded." Varlamov is free on $5,000 bond and has been travelling and playing with the team. He is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 2. The judge who allowed his release ordered Varlamov to stay away from his girlfriend and told him he could not drink alcohol or possess firearms. If convicted, he could face a sentence ranging from probation to two years in jail, prosecutors said. Varlamov was acquired from Washington in a 2011 trade. The Pittsburgh Penguins got one of the top free agent defencemen on the market and didnt have to give up big money or term to get it done. Numbers Game looks at the signing of Christian Ehrhoff. The Penguins Get: D Christian Ehrhoff. Ehrhoff, 31, was surprisingly bought out of his contract by the Buffalo Sabres and became one of the most appealing free agent defencemen on a thin market, yet decided to accept a one-year deal with a championship contender. While Ehrhoffs possession numbers werent great in Buffalo, thats no surprise playing for the worst team in the league, and Ehrhoff has consistently posted very strong relative possession numbers, so even though the Penguins may not be a possession powerhouse, they are a better team and have a supporting cast that should allow Ehrhoff to thrive. Since 2008-2009, he has 223 points, which ranks 13th among defencemen and hes averaged better than 23 minutes per game in each of the past four seasons. In Pittsburgh, Ehrhoff effectively takes over for Matt Niskanen, which should include some power play time, but this will allow the Penguins to be a little more judicious as they bring in their young defencemen. Simon Despres is due to move into he lineup and both Olli Maatta and prospect Derrick Pouliot are coming off shoulder surgery, so having Ehrhoff, Paul Martin and Kris Letang gives them a core around which they can anchor their defence. This isnt to suggest that Ehrhoff is a saviour, but hes capable of handling top-pair minutes, so getting that calibre of defenceman without having to give up term or significant money is a virtual gift for the Penguins. Additionally, signing for one year and $4-million, Ehrhoff sets himself up for another big contract next season, should he be so inclined. From the Sabres perspective, they already know that they arent going to be good next year and, apparently, had concerns about Ehrhoff retiring before the end of his contract and the recapture penalties that would go with it. Theyre decidedly worse without Ehrhoff, but being worse when your team finishes 30th still means finishing 30th. Aldridge scored 28 points in his third game back from injury and the Trail Blazers extended their winning streak to three games with a 105-98 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday night. "Whether hes scoring or not, just getting him touches has a big effect on the game, has a big effect on how the defence reads our offence," Blazers centre Robin Lopez said of Aldridge. Reserve Mo Williams added 17 points and Wesley Mathews had 15 for the Blazers, who avoided a three-game sweep in the season series. "LA coming back has brought us back to what we do and how we do it," Williams said. "With LA, we know what we need to do and where we need to go, where we get our shots, and when to be aggressive." Portland opened a two-game lead over Golden State for the fifth place in the Western Conference playoff race and pulled within 2 1/2 games of No. 4 Houston with seven games remaining. Zach Randolph scored 21 points and Marc Gasol had 20 for the Grizzlies, who lost back-to-back games for the first time since Feb. 3-5 and dropped a half-game behind idle Dallas for the Wests eighth and final playoff berth. The Blazers shot 52.0 per cent (39 of 75) and had five players score in double figures. Aldridge, who missed seven games with a back contusion, was the catalyst on offence, making 10 of 20 shots from the field and going 8 for 8 at the free-throw line. The Grizzlies were determined to play Aldridge straight up defensively and not double, as they had in their two wins over Portland. Memphis looked mostly to Randolph, their 6-foot-9, 260-pound power forward, to go toe-to-toe with the Blazers All-Star. "LaMarcus is their horse," Randolph said. "Hes what makes them go, so anytime youve got your best player out there, it makes a difference." Portland dominated the second quarter, making 10 of 16 shots (62.5 per cent) and getting eight points from both Aldridge and Williams to extend a two-point lead at the end of the first quarter to a 57-45 halftime advantage. "We knew exactly what they were going to run," Grizzlies guard Tony Allen said. "It was a grreat game plan defensively, and they executed.dddddddddddd" Mathews and Aldridge combined for 13 points during a first quarter that had eight lead changes and six ties before Will Barton followed his own miss to score and give the Blazers a 25-23 lead. The Grizzlies, making their third stop on a five-game swing, made 3 of 14 shots in the first six minutes of the second quarter and were outscored 16-6 as the Blazers extended the lead to 41-29 on two free throws by Aldridge with 5:59 left in the half. "We matched Memphis physicality," Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. "Our shooting lineup gave us some separation in the first half. We got a lot of good effort off the bench, too." Mike Conleys 3-pointer pulled the Grizzlies within 43-34, but the Blazers reeled off six quick points to open their largest lead of the second quarter, going up 49-34 when Damian Lillard set up Thomas Robinson for a transition layup with 3:58 to play in the half. Lillard, held scoreless on 0-for-3 shooting in the first half, hit his first four shots of the second half, including a 3-pointer that pushed Portlands lead to 78-60. Trailing 91-70 early in the fourth, the Grizzlies mounted one final push and cut the Blazers lead to 103-96 on James Johnsons 3-pointer from the left corner with 1:12 to play. Gasols basket pulled Memphis within 103-98 before Lillard made two free throws with 6 seconds left to close out the scoring. "Portland came out more aggressive and played with more energy," Grizzlies coach David Joerger said. "They have a ton of playmakers and they made us chase them all around the floor." NOTES: The Grizzlies are 16-1 record in road games in which they hold teams to fewer than 90 points and are now 4-15 record when allowing more than 90 points. . Portlands 105 points were the most against Memphis during all of March. The Grizzlies entered Sundays game leading the West in points allowed at 94.0 points per game. . Lopez became the fourth Blazer to record 300 offensive rebounds in a season, joining Kermit Washington, Buck Williams and Chris Dudley. . NEW ORLEANS - When DeMar DeRozan found out he had made his first NBA All-Star Game two weeks ago, receiving the news on the team plane upon landing in Denver, he wasnt surprised but instead described the feeling as a surreal one. Now - 48 hours before the main event - the Raptors leading scorer is soaking it all in, still a little starry-eyed, mindful of how far he has come and what its taken to get him to this point. "Its starting to become real now," he told TSN.ca Friday afternoon, as the All-Star participants gathered in the cavernous ballroom of a New Orleans hotel for their annual media day circus.  "I think when I really go out there, put the jersey on and head to the arena Sunday evening [it will really hit me]." The 24-year-old DeRozan does not have to look very far to find mementos of his NBA journey, the closest one will be sitting adjacent to him on the Eastern Conference teams bench when the game tips off on Sunday. Heat forward and fellow All-Star reserve Chris Bosh was one of the first to pull DeRozan aside upon arrival in New Orleans this weekend. Bosh - the Raptors last representative in the All-Star Game, four years ago - left for Miami following DeRozans rookie season. He, as much as anyone, can attest to DeRozans growth as a player and the message he had for his former teammate was just that. "Im proud of you," he told the Raptors guard. "It means a lot," DeRozan said of Boshs kind words. "We were just laughing because I remember being the only rookie, 19-years-old on the Raptors, him being a star and seeing all the things he was going through when he was [in Toronto] and how he had to carry the team on his back." "After he left I had to step up and learn. Its just crazy, we were laughing at how fast time flies. It seems like yesterday I was that rookie who wouldnt shoot the ball and passed it to Chris every time." There was pressure on DeRozan to contribute right out of the gate, starting 65 games - most of them alongside Bosh - as a rookie in Toronto. He was, to his own admission, a deer in the NBA headlights. He attempted fewer than seven shots per game - which more than doubled in his second year, without Bosh in the lineup - yet averaged less than an assist in over 21 minutes a night. At the time, becoming an All-Star was not even on his radar, his focus was self-preservation and proving his worth as an NBA player. "Youre always stuck in the moment," he remembered. "You stay on course with your everyday tasks and you work towards something like this, you just work every single day. I knew if I just stay consistent, stay focused and didnt get down on myself too much I knew I had a chance." Five seasons later - one year removed from signing a long-term contract extension - his work ethic has not wavered, if anything its gotten stronger, more relentless. "Im proud of DeMar," said Terrence Ross, who has become a protégé of DeRozans. "Hes put in so much work. To see him here is like, man, I wish we could give him more for all hes done. Im just happy hes here getting a chance to prove to the world what he can do." Now that hes here, now that hes come this far he knows not to take it for granted. DeRozan - who is tied for fourth in the league in minutes played, also nursing an ankle injury - could have used the time off but youll never get him to admit it. Hes honoured to be representing the third-place, division-leading Raptors on the world stage. He was caught off guard when his agent called to deliver the leagues invitation to participate in Saturdays Skills Challenge, an event usually reserved for point guards, one thats out of his comfort zone. Originally he declined but it didnt take much prodding to convince him to change his mind. "Everybody doesnt get a chance to be a part of All-Star Weekend," he said when he was announced as a participant last week. "The big thing for me is to go out there and have fun. I think it will be cool to go out there and represent my team as much as I can and you never know, I might mess around and win it." DeRozans attitude is a refreshing change of pace from many of todays star players who decline invitations to participate in All-Star Saturday Night each year to preserve their energy, prevent injury or simply because they feel like theyve graduated from it. Sure, LeBron still wont dunk but perhaps times are changing after all. For the first time since 1988 three All-Stars will compete in the Slam Dunk contest, one of them, Damian Lillard will participate in all five major events this weekend. His rationale is on par with DeRozans. "Im happy Im really a part of the weekend," said Lillard, another first-time All-Star. "Ive gotten great reception from the fans. Fans are excited about having someone who is participating in the All-Star Game being in all the events." DeRozan is considered a long shot to defeat Lillard, the reigning champion, in Saturdays Skills Challenge but hes not putting too much pressure on himself. For him, the weekend is all about embracing a new opportunity, his first real All-Star opportunity. Tavon Austin Jersey . Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Foligno scored a power-play goal with 18.8 seconds left in overtime as the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Washington Capitals 3-2 on Thursday to extend their win streak to five games. The Blue Jackets went on the power play with 1:57 to play when Jason Chimera was called for interference. After Sergei Bobrovsky made two huge short-handed saves, Jack Johnson, who had drawn the penalty, dished to Foligno for a one-timer from the right circle. The puck sailed over Braden Holtbys glove, giving Foligno his second goal of the game. Bobrovsky finished with 39 saves, while Holtby stopped 20-of-23 shots. The Capitals were seeking a fourth straight win. Holtby kept the game tied with a glove save on Cam Atkinson early in the third period. Washington grabbed a 2-1 lead when Troy Brouwer sneaked out from behind the net to tip Matt Niskanens point shot at 9:20. Kevin Connauton, who scored the overtime game-winner in Columbus 3-2 triumph against Philadelphia on Tuesday, tied it with a one-timer from the point at 10:59. The Blue Jackets killed a late penalty to force overtime. Quick strikes were common during the Capitals recent surge and that trend continued Thursday with the team converting on an early power play. John Carlson fired a shot from the slot that Eric Fehr tipped past Bobrovsky 3:19 into the game. It was the fourth straight game that Washington scored in the first five minutes of the first period. The Capitals at one point held a 13-1 shot advantage, but couldnt build on their lead thanks to Bobrovsky. Foligno beat Holtby on a long wrist shot with 4:24 remaining in the first to tie it 1-1. Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play in a scoreless second period during which Washington had a 15-4 edge in shots. Goalie coach Jim Corsi will not return, and assistant Teppo Numminens contract will not be renewed, the Sabres announced. Two other assistants, Joe Sacco and Jerry Forton, have a choice to stay with the Sabres after being offered jobs within the teams hockey department. The moves came three days after the Sabres (21-51-10) finished last in the standings, and closed one the worst and most tumultuous seasons in their 44-year history. The shake-up doesnt come as a surprise. Nolan inherited the staff in November, after being hired on an interim basis to replace Ron Rolston. Nolan has since been signed to a three-year contract and it was widely anticipated that he would begin hiring his own staff this off-season. Former NHL goalie Arturs Irbe is regarded a potential candidate to join Nolans staff. Irbe is from Latvia and has previously worked with Nolan, who has spent the past three years coaching the countrys national team. Corsi was the Sabrees longest tenured assistant after completing his 16th season in Buffalo.dddddddddddd He played a role in mentoring former Sabres great Dominik Hasek and then Ryan Miller, who was traded to St. Louis on Feb. 28. Numminen, a former NHL defenceman, completed his third season in Buffalo after being first hired by former Sabres coach Lindy Ruff. Sacco, the former Colorado Avalanche head coach, and Forton were hired by Rolston last off-season. In the meantime, Sacco will be working as an assistant under United States coach Peter Laviolette at the World Hockey championships in Belarus next month. The Sabres also announced theyre adding a second minor-league affiliate after reaching a deal with Elmira (N.Y.) of the ECHL. Elmira will complement the Sabres top affiliate, AHL Rochester. Both minor-league teams are located within 150 miles of Buffalo. Buffalo is in the midst of rebuilding from scratch. Through a series of trades, the Sabres have stockpiled a significant number of draft picks spread over the next three years, spurring the teams need to add another affiliate. Britains Aljaz Bedene is through to the second round at the Miami Open after a 4-6 6-2 6-3 win over Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain. The win was a welcome boost for the World No 57, who was told on Wednesday that he would not be able to play in the Davis Cup for Great Britain. Bedene, who was born in Slovenia but has been based in Hertfordshire since 2007, has had an appeal against the International Tennis Federations original decision turned down. And he cut a dejected figure during the first set of his match against Carballes Baena, losing his opening four service games and hurling his racket to the ground in annoyance at one point. However, he was not broken again in the match and began to dominate with his ground strokes in set two, which he clinched when a powerful forehand caught the line.He was similarly assertive in the decider, taking control early and serving the match out to love when a Carballes Baena return drifted wide.In the second round Bedene will face another Spaniard in the form of Roberto Bautista Agut, and the Brit will feel he has every chance, having beaten the 17th seed on a pair of occasions in 2015.By purchasing a Sky Sports Day Pass for £6.99 or Sky Sports Week Pass for £10.99, you can enjoy access to all seven Sky Sports channels and watch on a TV with a NOW TV Box or on a range of devices. Stanford took the lead early with five birdies in a row on the front nine and finished the day with eight birdies. The best round of the tournament so far left the five-time LPGA Tour winner at 8-under 136. Stanford said she was just trying to make it through the day. "Finally, I got comfortable on these greens and it felt great. I mean, to see the ball go in that much is a lot of fun," the 36-year-old said. "It was nice to see. I needed a round like that." Just like the first round, the contenders played Day 2 at Ko Olina Golf Club with gusty winds — up to 18 mph, according to the National Weather Service. "I think its more about putting. I hate to admit this, but I dont always control my trajectory on purpose. It just kind of happpens," Stanford said.dddddddddddd"When I get into the wind, and Ive talked about this with my instructor, for some reason my body just starts moving into the ball more and I tend to keep it lower." Hawaii favourite Michelle Wie was one stroke back after a 67 that included five birdies. Wie hit a birdie on the par-5 13th hole that helped her maintain momentum. "That putt was really, really, really fast. It was downwind, down grain, downhill and I just barely touched it and I think the crowd rolled that one in for sure," Wie said. "I thought it lipped out for sure, and it just kind of went around then, and so it was awesome." Christie Kerr, a 16-time tour winner, shot a 66 and was tied for third in a group of four at 138. SAKHIR, Bahrain -- Mercedes further demonstrated its early-season dominance by outpacing its rivals in Fridays practice sessions for the Bahrain Grand Prix, indicating the team is well poised for a third straight win to start 2014. Lewis Hamilton followed up his victory last week in Malaysia by having the fastest time in both sessions, the second of which was held under lights for the first time at the Bahrain International Circuit, which has switched to being a night race. Hamiltons time of 1 minute, 34.690 seconds was one third of a second faster than teammate and championship leader Nico Rosberg, and more than a second faster than third-place Fernando Alonso of Ferrari. "The car feels better than when we were testing here -- balance-wise, it was extremely good," Hamilton said. "There are still some tweaks we need to make it feel perfect, but Im feeling good." Defending four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel was a distant seventh on the timesheets, behind his fourth-place Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo -- who carries a 10-grid-place penalty into Sundays race. The pair was split by Felipe Massa of Williams and McLarens Jenson Button. Vettel, who was a competitive third in Malaysia, was downbeat about Red Bulls prospects of hanging on to the Mercedes coattails on Sunday. "They are very quick. It is not a surprise, they were very quick in the testing here. They have proved that again," Vettel said. "It will be a long way for us to catch up." Even more dispiriting for Mercedes rivals was that the dominance reflected by their lap times on lighter fuel and soft tires was even more pronounced when using higher fuel loads to practice for race conditions. Williams had a distinctly different approach to the days practice, doing relatively few laps to extend engine life, reckoning that it had all the data it needed about the Bahrain track after extensive preseason testing there. Toro Rosso rookie Daniil Kvyat was eighth fastest, ahead of McLarens Kevin Magnussen and Force Indias Sergio Perez. The night session, which began in falling desert temperatures at 6 p.m. local time -- the same as Sundays race -- saw many drivers struggling to get sufficient heat in the tires, misjudging braking distances and running off track. Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - The body of missing Ohio State football player Kosta Karageorge was found Sunday near campus, police said. The Columbus police department said Karageorge, who was reported missing on Wednesday, was found in a dumpster not far from his apartment where he was last seen. Police said the preliminary investigation shows the walk-on senior defensive lineman died from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A gun was recovered at the scene, police said. Karageorge, who was 22, missed practice after disappearing and had not been seen since leaving his apartment in dark clothing at 2 a.m. on Wednesday. Despite being just 6-7 entering Week 16 action, the Ticats are all alone at the top of the East Division standings, two points ahead of both Montreal and Toronto. Following a very shaky start to the 2014 campaign, Hamilton has now won four in a row and five of the last six outings, thanks to a come-from- behind 19-17 victory over British Columbia last weekend. Kicker Justin Medlock played the hero for Hamilton as he booted five field goals, including an eight-yard effort in the final minutes of regulation to bring the hosts back for the thrilling win, the fourth in as many opportunities at the new Tim Hortons Field. Hamilton quarterback Zach Collaros converted 27-of-43 passes for 367 yards and was intercepted once as the team was kept out of the end zone, but still came out on top, thanks in part to a pair of two-point plays from BC kicker Ricky Schmitt who conceded in his own end zone. The Cats managed to roll up 429 yards of total offense in the meeting, but were stymied by 12 penalties that cost them 128 yards of field position. On the other side of the ball, Hamilton limited the visitors to just 239 yards. While the Tiger-Cats are in the drivers seat in the division at the moment, the Argos have a chance to cause a bit of a log jam in the standings if all goes to play this week. Despite having to deal with some crucial injuries throughout the campaign, Toronto is still within striking distance of securing a playoff berth as it attempts to put together a three-game win streak for the first time this season. Unlike the Tiger-Cats who had to fight their way back versus the Lions, Toronto was the hunted as Edmonton tried to complete a comeback bid last Saturday, but came up short in a 33-32 final. Ricky Ray converted 22-of-33 passes for 224 yards and two scores, as well as one interception, while Chad Owens continued to prove his value to the club with nine catches for 106 yards and both majors through the air. As was the case with Hamilton, the Argos also leaned heavily on their kicker as Swayze Waters knocked through all but one of his seven field goal tries, finishing with 21 points all on his own. Toronto did surrender 330 yards of offense to the Eskimos, but the visitors severely diminished their chances at a victory by being flagged a staggering 18 times for an incredible 224 yards.dddddddddddd In typical Ray fashion, he has completed 68.1 percent of his passes for 3,430 yards and is by far the most accomplished signal caller this season in terms of passing touchdowns with 24. Because of countless injuries and changes in depth charts for other teams, no other quarterback has more than 17 TDs at this juncture. However, in order to give Ray plenty of opportunities to find teammates in or around the goal line this season, the Argos have had to almost give up on their attempts to find a running back who can consistently reach the end zone. Granted, Curtis Steele has run 78 times for 493 yards and four touchdowns, but beyond him Toronto has just one other rushing TD. Over on the other side, Hamilton has been one of those teams playing musical quarterback this season, although Collaros seems to be giving the squad some measure of stability. However, while the youngster has completed 66.5 percent of his attempts, his seven majors are nearly matched by his six INTs. On a more positive note, as a group the Hamilton signal callers are tied for third in the league in passing yards to this point with 3,590, matching the effort of Toronto ironically enough. But a slight caveat to that effort shows Hamilton with just 12 aerial scores, half the number of Ray and the Argos, while being picked off 13 times. The clubs collided back in Week 10 in Hamilton where the home team squeezed out a 13-12 victory, despite being held scoreless for the second half. Medlock connected on a pair of field goals in that meeting and Collaros hooked up with Bakari Grant on a nine-yard major in the second quarter, the quarterback hitting on 27-of-38 passes for 317 yards. Ray, who was sacked four time and intercepted once, had a mere 16 completions for 142 yards and a score. The running game for the Argos was limited to 35 yards on eight attempts. With the win, Hamiltons advantage in the all-time series moved to 126-91-2, considering only regular-season matchups dating back to 1950. The Cats have won three straight over Toronto. The teams will be right back here in Toronto for their third and final regular-season meeting 15 days from now, a game that could have serious playoff implications. NEW YORK -- Brandon McCarthys wife had more trouble slogging through Yankee Stadium traffic than he did against the Cincinnati Reds. McCarthy earned his first win for New York with an impressive debut in pinstripes, and Brett Gardner drove in three runs from the leadoff spot to send the Yankees past the Reds 7-1 on Saturday. Told his wife, Amanda, tweeted several wisecracks about all the highway congestion that delayed her arrival at the ballpark, McCarthy could only smile. "If everybody isnt apprised of what shes doing every few minutes, God knows what would happen," he said. Carlos Beltran homered, Kelly Johnson hit a two-run single and the Yankees ended Alfredo Simons six-game winning streak in the right-handers first outing since the All-Star game. Derek Jeter had an RBI single, and New York won the first two in a three-game interleague series, leaving Cincinnati with five straight road losses. "I think this is kind of a blip in the radar, but we certainly need to turn things around if we want to get that game tomorrow," Reds manager Bryan Price said. Acquired from Arizona in a July 6 trade, McCarthy (1-0) struck out nine and walked none over six innings in his second start for New York and first at home. He said the Yankees have encouraged him to throw his cutter, a pitch he was instructed to scrap with the Diamondbacks. "Hes got top-of-the-rotation stuff, and were really glad to have him," catcher Brian McCann said. "He was doing whatever he wanted to on the mound today." McCarthy threw 71 of 99 pitches for strikes, improving to 3-0 with a 1.78 ERA in his last four outings after winning only once in his initial 16 starts this season. "Actually, that was the frustrating part about the beginning part of the season is, I felt sharp," McCarthy said. "I felt like everything was where I wanted it to be, I just wasnt doing everything I needed to to get the best out of it. So I felt like Ive thrown better this year than any year in the past, its just the results havent followed." The right-hander was 3-10 with a 4.80 ERA for Arizona before New York obtained him to upgrade a rotation depleted by injuries to four starters. His first outing for the Yankees was a no-decision July 9 at Cleveland. "You realize that youre putting the pinstripes on for the first time, but I trry and wash all that away as much as I can and just focus on execution, focus on my routine, what Im doing.dddddddddddd All that stuff I can think about later," McCarthy said. "I mean, youre pitching for the Yankees, and thats an opportunity no matter what the circumstances are. For me, its at a point in my career where I want to be challenged. I really want to be in a pennant race. I wanted to be closer to the playoffs. I wanted to be in a market that is difficult. I wanted that kind of stuff to see if I could push myself to the next level, so its a great opportunity in that sense." A converted reliever, the surprising Simon (12-4) is tied for the big league lead in wins -- but he was betrayed Saturday by a Reds defence that entered with the highest fielding percentage and fewest errors in the majors. The right-hander allowed four runs -- two earned -- and five hits in five innings, the first time he failed to finish six innings since going 3 2-3 in a 6-3 loss at Dodger Stadium on May 27. He went 6-0 with a 2.47 ERA in his next eight starts. Chris Heisey homered for the Reds, struggling to mount much offence this weekend without injured boppers Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips. Adam Warren, Shawn Kelley and Matt Thornton finished for the Yankees, who struck out 13. It was the first time they whiffed that many without issuing a walk since July 7, 2006, at Tampa Bay. Cincinnati has struck out 23 times and walked once in the first two games of the series. "Weve got to pick it up a little bit," Todd Frazier said. "Thats not where we want to be." NOTES: Simon fell to 0-3 in seven games, including four starts, against the Yankees. ... McCarthy entered 0-2 with a 14.73 ERA in two starts and one relief appearance against Cincinnati. He had a 6.89 ERA in three previous starts at Yankee Stadium. ... Jeter also was presented with three photos taken June 3, 2003, the day he was named the 11th Yankees captain while the team was in Cincinnati. ... DALLAS - Monta Ellis came to Dallas because he wanted to pair up with Dirk Nowitzki and see what kind of scoring tag team they could be. With the Mavericks in danger of making their playoff road much more difficult, they shared their best moment of the season. Ellis matched his season high with 37 points and Nowitzki scored 21 of his 23 during a second-half rally that carried the Mavericks back to the post-season in a 101-98 victory against the Phoenix Suns on Saturday night. "The reason we won is because we had one of the best players on the planet in Dirk," coach Rick Carlisle said. "And because Monta Ellis, at the time we needed him most, stepped up and played his biggest game of the year." The Mavericks left the Suns and Memphis to battle for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference by winning their home finale, and avoided a possible winner-take-all game at the Grizzlies on the last night of the regular season. Dallas is back in the playoffs after a 12-year streak ended last season. "It felt like the playoffs started early this year," Nowitzki said. "This is where we want to be, on the big stage of the playoffs." Eric Bledsoe scored 29 points and Channing Frye had 21 after a hot start for the Suns, who play Memphis on Monday night in a game that figures to go a long way toward deciding the final playoff team in the West. "Weve got to stay positive," Bledsoe said. "You could tell it was a playoff atmosphere. I thought everybody laid it out on the court." Ellis and Nowitzki brought the Mavericks back by hitting five 3-pointers between them in less than 4 minutes of the third quarter, erasing most of a 13-point deficit. Then they teamed to get the lead back in the fourth, and Dallas held on in the final minutes. Nowitzki broke an 89-all tie with a 3-pointer, shouting "Boom!" as he signalled a "3 with both hands. Seconds later, Ellis stole the ball from Frye and hit a tough layup with Bledsoe riding his hip. After a rare miss from Frye — who made his first five 3-pointers — Devin Harris hit a 3 from the top of the key, holding his arms up and looking to the ceiling in apparent relief after struggling from long range recently. The Suns were down 99-91, but got back within two when Bledsoe stole a pass by Ellis and coasted in for a layup with 1:15 remaining. It was one of 19 turnovers for the Mavericks, and the Suns had 18 in a fast-paced game with a lot of wild passes. Bledsoe then missed a free throw that would have tied the game again, and Ellis missed one of two from the line twice in the final 20 seconds to give Phoenix more chances to tie or go ahead. The Mavericks were finally safely in the playoffs when Markieff Morris was off target on a high-arching 3-point try with 2 seconds left. Ellis, who was 15 of 23 from the field and made three of four from long range, kept up his hot shooting in the third quarter and Nowitzki joined him after a cold first half as the Mavericks top two scorers combined for 44 points after halftime. "I was just feeling what the defence would do," said Ellis, who made the playoffs last year with Milwaukee but got swept by Miami in the first round and longed for a change, signing with Dallas as a free agent. "The floor was open for me. Coach just had me attack." Dallas third-quarter surge started after P.J. Tucker missed a free throw on a potential three-point play that would have given the Suns their biggest lead at 70-56. Vince Carter made a driving layup and Ellis hit back-to-back shots from the side of the 3-point arc, screaming for emphasis after the second one. Then it was Nowitzkis turn to hit two in a row and shout, which he did after getting Dallas within 72-70 from a couple of feet behind the arc late in the third quarter. The Mavericks took their first lead since midway through the second quarter when Nowitzki hit a layup on a pass from Ellis to go up 88-87 midway through the fourth quarter. Aqib Talib Jersey . The eighth-year point guard played in his 500th career game on Sunday, a 98-93 win over the Orlando Magic.  Does he feel like hes played in that many games? "No," he said initially, before reconsidering. In the end it can all be about how it ends. So often for the greatest of all time, it is the final chapter in their careers that they struggle with the most. The lines, having come easy for these supreme performers for so long, suddenly look muddled and make no sense. The confident swagger is replaced by anxiety of what comes next. This leads many to tear apart the passionate bond they have created with their team in search for pastures new; a time to flirt with others in a desperate attempt to keep the dream alive for just a little bit longer. Time waits for no one, though, and eventually every athlete is forced into their final act. Having spent much of their career in control, while excelling, it is this chapter where many lose control. After all, for every Derek Jeter, there is a Brett Favre. Steven Gerrards footballing career is not coming to an end but with a remarkable piece of gratitude, his Premier League one is. Gerrard has been the gift that has kept on giving for a generation of Liverpool fans starved of success and too often forced to live in the past. Never blessed with incredible natural ability, Gerrard was the ideal Red, the perfect Liverpool player who went out and made his own moments and because of his incredible self-belief, he has been in the middle of everything great the club has accomplished this century. His latest big moment has come away from the pitch. Gerrard has embraced the final chapter by picking it up before most expected, ensuring he can write it himself. With many of their great rivals winning far more, Liverpool fans were terrified of seeing the image of Gerrard playing for someone else. Yet, this was never going to be a player who would sign for another club and play against Liverpool. The comparisons with Frank Lampard will always exist, after all the two excelled in the league at the same time, playing for England over 100 times each and 59 times together, even though they never came close to clicking as teammates. Lampard has many strengths and is entitled to his own success but make no mistake, there is no chance that Gerrards career would see him playing for another team in the Premier League and going up against Liverpool. He had chances to leave, more than once, during his time and privately, he will have wondered if he made the right choices but it was all of those times in which he said no that has now led him to the most final of yess. It was just time. There are some who have wondered if Steven Gerrard was born twenty years too late. It turned out that he was born right in the middle of greatness on Merseyside. Liverpool Football Club were the kings of English football and would go on to win 10 English titles and four European Cups between 1975 and 1990. It was a time in the world that Gerrard would have loved to play in. Surrounded by genuine superstars, he would have relished being apart of so many massiive occasions.dddddddddddd Liverpool led the way on and off the field during that time and it was no coincidence that trophies came their way because of their work in recruitment. More than anyone, they knew when to let a player leave. Better for someone to go a year early than a year late. Decades on, the team is no longer in a position to have such a stance. When greatness leaves you, sometimes your choices can be more limited. This time, it is their club captain who makes such a decision. Liverpool had offered him a new contract, yet it was one he clearly had decided against taking and no one could blame him for that. Throughout his Liverpool career, Steven George Gerrard was a talisman, a player who scored enormous goals and regularly made a massive difference over the course of 90 minutes. At 34, less and less of these games are happening. He could have accepted the clubs offer and enjoyed scoring more goals against clubs like Leicester, while sitting on the bench to rest weary limbs against others, like Ryan Giggs did in recent years for Manchester United, for example, but he knew the club had an enormous problem with this proposition. No longer close to being a genuine championship contender, Liverpool have no one in their team that they can play in midfield and make people think its a good idea to rest Gerrard. He may be way past his best but it is a true indictment on the club that he remains so valuable to them. It is a responsibility that Gerrard has embraced for years but in recent weeks, it has become a huge burden. Despite his importance, he can no longer be trusted to play deeper because the playmaking role has gone with the absence of genuine top class centre forwards. As the game at Old Trafford last month showed, he is just a vulnerable central midfielder that gets swallowed up by big games, albeit one that can still show rare moments of individual brilliance. Once again, the fact that he wasnt surrounded by top players in a top team hurt him and is now forcing him to move, but as he does, he recognizes his worth to the club and the city. Many a tear will roll down a Scouse cheek in the next six months now that Gerrard has decided to leave Anfield for good but as they wish him well in his next stage abroad, they know he has left as one of them. Fewer and fewer players in all sports have reasons to be so connected with their clubs but for Gerrard and the city of Liverpool, it was the complete opposite. He was one of their own that understood what they felt. For a community that is obsessed about their football club and what it means to play for them, this meant everything to that fan base. Liverpool lost a world-class striker and a Premier League title in 2014. A day into 2015, they are already losing something bigger. Theyll be lucky to find anyone close to another Steven Gerrard at Anfield. A place where hell never walk alone. HOUSTON -- Soony Saad scored late in the first half, and Dominic Dwyer added a penalty kick goal in the second to help 10-man Sporting Kansas City beat the Houston Dynamo 2-0 on Friday night. Kansas City snapped a five-game winless streak to improve to 6-5-4. "For them to be able to come in here and get a win being a man down and having a lot of changes, was huge," Kansas City coach Peter Vermes said. "From that perspective, its more for us than just three points going into the (World Cup) break." Houston (5-9-2) has lost four straight -- all shutouts -- and hasnt scored in 389 minutes. Houston had a few regulars, including starting goalkeeper Tally Hall, replaced in the starting lineup. Houston coach Dominic Kinnear took responsibility for the loss. "Its my fault for giving guys a chance," Kinnear said. "Im the guy who picks the team Im the guy who makes the subs. This game is my fault today, I take 100 per cent. I dont look back on years and say, Oh that was a tough stretch in 08. I dont know. Its not a good time right now." Saad scored in the 45th minute, taking a pass from Benny Feilhaber and sending a shot into the right net from just the left of the upper half-circle. "Even with us being down a man, I feel like we stayed mentally focused and picked our moments to go," Saad said. "On the one where I scored, that was just us stepping up as a team, capitalizing on a mistake and it was perfect right before half to get momentum going into the half." Dwyer struck in the 70th, firing his penalty kick low into the right net and freezing Houston goalkeeper Tyler Deric. Sporting was awarded the penalty kick after Houstons A.J. Cochran had a hand ball in the box off a corner kick. Kansas City played the final 69 minutes a man down after Toni Dovale was given a straight red card in the 21st minute for elbowing Houstons Alex Lopez in the face. The win was Kansas Citys first since May 10 in Montreal. "We were up in it today with the red card early in the game," Dwyer said. "It was a lot of running for us. We stayed in touch with the game and was able to get the three points. It was a good test of character (to be down a man). We had a lot of guys who normally dont start who came in today and had a fantastic performance from everyone on the field." Warren Creavalle had a chance to score for Houston in the 76th minute, but his shot from the right box was saved by a diving Eric Konberg. Houston had two more chances late in second-half stoppage time. Giles Barnes sent a shot from inside the upper goalkeepers box off the face of Kronberg. The rebound attempt by Will Bruin in the middle of the box was slowed by the traffic in front of the net and cleared out. "I think we need to look at everything from back to front," Barnes said. "Im sure thats exactly what we will do out on the training field. There will be some guys coming back, some people can get some extra fitness work in so that after the break we come back ready to go." Sporting Kansas City lost captain and midfielder Paulo Nagamura in the third minute after he and Cochran went up for a ball and Cochran headed Nagamura in the back of the head. Alex Martinez was substituted in for Nagamura, who was taken off the field on a stretcher and taken to the locker room where he was diagnosed with a concussion. He was not taken to a hospital. Houston lost starting defender David Horst in the ninth minute with a left leg injury after a corner kick. Horst hobbled to the sideline, and Eric Brunner came in for him. Feilhaber, who was tackled hard by Brunner on the first goal, left the game with a left shoulder injury at halftime.
